PodAware Day 2 Blanket Permission

Welcome to day two of [community profile] pod_aware! If it's still Monday in your time zone, you can still make day 1 posts, we just want day 2 info to be there for the earlier time zones.

To post a work for [community profile] pod_aware, please include the following in your notes or somewhere easily visible to help spread awareness about podfic:

Blanket permission is a way for fan artists to let other fans know their comfort with others playing with their works. It's particularly helpful to podficcers when authors give blanket permission for anyone to podfic their works without having to ask first. To find out more on blanket permission with regards to podfic check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

To make it easier for you, you can just copy and past from here:

To help get us in the mindset, here's a podcast done by [livejournal.com profile] jenepod, [personal profile] paraka and [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo, where we talk about the benefits of blanket permission:

Download: MP3 or M4B

Feel free to talk about today's theme in the comments and if you post [community profile] pod_aware stuff off the comm, make sure to drop us a link so we can add you to the masterlist!

In theory, I meant to post something about it, but at least reposting the details of today has to help awareness a little.

I'm making a post about my blanket permission as a fanartist. Just wanted to point out first that the "strong" tag in the blurb isn't closed at the end, so some people might have a whole bold post. =)

Etiquette Rules?

[personal profile] cybel 2011-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for bringing up the issue of letting the author know when a podfic is posted, whether or not they specifically ask to be notified.

As a podbooker, I've found that many, many authors have been unaware that a podfic existed until I commented to them about the podbook's availability. Frankly, this appalls me strictly from a common courtesy standpoint.

I'm always pretty shocked when people don't let authors know that they've podficced their story, it seems so obvious to me!

Although, I can be a very shy person, so I also get being intimidated by the awesome people in fandom. There have been times where I got sweaty palms and all stammery over a fandom person I was in awe of and the thought of showing my work that was inspired by them is scary. I still always do it, but I guess I can understand a mindset that wouldn't?

I certainly understand being shy. I've always had that problem myself.

Still, I can't understand someone being willing to post their work to the entire internet but not being willing to let the author know. Personally, I'd be worried about the author hearing about it elsewhere and feeling slighted, or worse, upset.

Eh, one is broadcasting your work, and the other is actively pushing your work. As someone who subscribes to that mindset, it seems really obvious to me but I can try and explain it more if you're iterested.

Personally, I'd be worried about the author hearing about it elsewhere and feeling slighted, or worse, upset.
Well, that would only be a worry for me if the author hadn't given permission. And the thing is, I've asked author's for permission and had responses where they say yes, but clearly are uninterested in the podfic, it's not even that uncommon of a reaction. I can see if that's the reactions you're getting that it might make it seem like author's won't care when they've given blanket permission. *shrugs*

But yeah, the point still stands that you should tell an author always. :)

Basically we're in agreement: communication, especially where it impacts someone directly, is a courtesy most people appreciate. :-)

As I mentioned, and although it may not seem so at times - I've had over 60 years to beat my insecurities into submission - I'm very shy. As a result, I've learned to phrase things to protect my own fragile ego while still doing what needs to be done.

For instance, when letting an author know a new podbook of their work is available, I'm likely to say something like "There is a new podbook of so and so's lovely new podfic [here] if you would like to have a copy." This is nice and generic and doesn't make me feel like I'm blowing my own horn.

I've been very successful with this technique and often get grateful responses even from people who have put up blanket permissions, while at the same time it doesn't demand a response if the recipient doesn't feel like making one. It's all good.

As a thirty plus year veteran of fandom, I can't help but point out that the correct pronunciation of the word 'zine' is zeen, as in magazine. It's actually a short form of the word fanzine.

It is a testament to the difference in our ages (I'm *cough* OLD *cough*!) that you've likely never heard the word used in conversation. ;-)

[personal profile] paraka 2011-11-10 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually heard the pronunciations used interchangeably. I think it's one of those internet words that had an original pronunciation but a secondary one was adapter as people pronounced it as it was spelled rather than how it was originally pronounced. :)

I did actually know that zine was short for fanzine, which came from magazine, but I've always pronounced it "zine" *shrugs* Sorry if it bugged you. :)
